Origin Handcrafted makes knives and rings in Balmoral, Manitoba, from salvaged sawmill blades and whiskey barrel oak.
Origin Handcrafted makes knives and rings in Balmoral, Manitoba, a village north of Winnipeg. Marc Liss started the shop in 2011 and runs it with Kayla Penelton.
It began as rings in wood and metal, sold on Etsy and at craft shows. Then Liss tried making a knife in his brother's metal shop. The knives went online, chefs found them, and the orders stopped being local.
The steel comes off antique sawmill blades, and the handles are whiskey barrel oak, Manitoba maple, bison horn and antler. Liss works the rings from the same stock, so a ring and a kitchen knife from this shop look like they came from the same place. They did.
Liss makes them himself, and everything sold under the Origin name is made in Canada, in that one shop in Balmoral, and has been through his hands. One man can only cut so many blades in a week. Expect to wait.
