Lumel Studios

Lumel Studios is a glassblowing studio at 101 Keish Street in Whitehorse, Yukon. Luann and Mel Baker-Johnson opened it in May 2016 and still run it. Lumel is Lu and Mel. Everything they sell is blown in that building and made in Canada, from tumblers and whiskey glasses to larger pieces, all Northern in subject.

Luann and Mel spent four years getting the place built. They spent much of it with safety authorities, working out how you put a furnace that runs at glassblowing temperatures into a northern city. Then they had to keep it lit through winter.

Luann and Mel run glassblowing demonstrations in the hot shop every day, in front of the furnace. They teach there as well: walk-ins, school groups, seniors, and people who would not otherwise get near a furnace. They take commissions, do sand casting, and will work ashes into a piece.

Glass artists, students, tourists and people from around Whitehorse put the building up together. Luann and Mel have handed the pipe to whoever walks in ever since.
